2024 Big Walnut Youth Football-Fall Tackle

Dear Big Walnut Community,

Registration is now open for our Big Walnut Youth Football tackle divisions!

Our BWYF program and broader league (COYFL) continue to actively engage on ways to make the experience incrementally better each season for our youth. Here are highlights of the changes being made this season:
1.)    Each tackle player will be required to have at least one year of prior football experience (flag or tackle) to register for tackle football. Exceptions will be reviewed by our 7 member Board for extenuating circumstances.
2.)    Our program continues to grow, but there is a realistic limit to how much we can support with roster sizes given the impact on coaches, rosters, schedules and all the players. Similar to other COYFL organizations, we will be implementing a game-day roster limit this season. This roster limit will be well above the COYFL average and we want to include as many players as possible without negatively impacting the experience.
3.) If roster limits are reached during the registration process, we will use an objective evaluation for all players signed up to field the most players possible on our game-day rosters. We would then be in contact with each family/player in late July on how they can still be involved in the youth program if they are not part of the game-day roster for the season.

There are many important details below, please read through completely before registering.

Big Walnut Youth Football
Our goal is to be aligned with the Big Walnut High School Football program. We do this from a playbook perspective and with our overall culture. From how we practice to the language we use; we want to help create an eventual smooth transition to MS and HS football. We will be one program that brings out the best in our players (Iron Sharpens Iron). We will compete, learn, and have fun playing the game of football.

We continue to be part of Central Ohio Youth Football League (COYFL) and you can familiarize yourself with the latest online version of the rules. Organizations in this league come from areas such as New Albany, Worthington, Olentangy, Delaware, and more.

In 3rd and 4th grade, it is a combined “Junior” division, and we will have a max of two teams based on the coaches identified.

5th and 6th grade will continue to be in their own separate divisions, and we will have a max of two teams in each division.

Big Walnut will field two competitive teams in every division. No one team will ever be the same, but our Board and GMs for each division are responsible for strategically building two strong teams in each division with the goal that they both make it to the playoffs.

Before you register, we ask that you talk with your child on what goals/expectations they have for this upcoming season. Tackle football requires a high level of commitment. Practices will be 4 days a week starting July 22nd and then move to 3 days a week once in school where we learn, grow, and compete. We will practice as a combined program with everyone constantly moving, getting reps, and developing skills. However, gameday playing time and positions will be determined on who is best able to support their team and how they perform in practice. Like all other districts in COYFL, our program follows the 10-play minimum rule for all players on a roster. That means everyone will at least get 10 plays in a game, but it may not be at the position they want.

If you have questions, please reach out at [email protected] and one of our Board members would be happy to talk more about tackle. We also continue to have a very strong and growing Fall Flag Football league where the fundamentals (e.g. blocking) used at all levels are taught. That program is also aligned with HS terminology and we have separate divisions based on age/skill (open to all grades from K – 6). Registration for our flag division will open later this spring.

Key Dates
June and July: optional training sessions during the week led by Coach Zipfel and others. More details and separate sign-up to come.
June 14: Registration Ends
July 22: First Day of Practice and Evaluations
(detailed timeline will be emailed out after registration ends)

Practices and Season
We will start aggressively the week of July 22nd with four days of conditioning and basic install (no pads week 1). Practices will be three days per week once school starts. Games will start August 25th with a Big Walnut Youth Football preview day leading up to week 1. Our 3rd and 4th grade teams will practice together, as will all 5th and 6th grade teams. This will allow all kids to be coached by the same position coaches throughout the season.
Games are played on Sundays; home games at our current Big Walnut Intermediate School and away games at schools and/or parks around central Ohio. Including playoffs, the season should wrap up by the last weekend of October.

Equipment
Each athlete will be provided one pair of integrated football pants for practice, one pair of game pants, shoulder pads, black helmet, mouth guard (if an athlete does not purchase one), practice jersey, and game jersey (6th grade division will keep their named jersey).
Even with the increased costs of refs, trainer, helmets, and shoulder pads, the price for a full season will remain $225. Registration costs for Fall Flag will remain unchanged.

We are looking forward to a great 2024 season!
